AI Coding Agent Pricing Comparison Table (2026)

There are now enough AI coding tools on the market that comparing them one Google search at a time is its own chore. Every vendor's pricing page is formatted differently, "Pro" means something different depending on who's selling it, and half the plans don't make it obvious what you get beyond a chat window. This post exists so you don't have to open nine tabs — it's one table, updated for 2026, covering the tools people actually ask about when they say "AI coding agent."

What "pricing" actually means across these tools

Before the table, a quick note on why raw price alone is misleading. Two tools can both say "$20/month" and mean completely different things:

• Chat subscriptions with a coding agent included (ChatGPT Go/Plus, Claude Pro/Max): one plan covers the chat app and a terminal coding agent — Codex for ChatGPT plans, Claude Code for Claude plans. The price covers both, and usage limits apply (on Claude, chat and Claude Code share one limit).
• Editor-based subscriptions (Copilot Pro): inline suggestions inside your editor, plus agent and CLI use that draws on a monthly allowance of AI credits.
• Agent-first tools and IDEs (Cursor, Windsurf/Devin, Replit, meshcode) create files, edit multiple files at once, run the code, and iterate on errors — closer to a junior engineer working the ticket than an autocomplete bar.

Comparing a $10/month plan to a $100/month plan on price alone isn't really apples-to-apples, so the table below includes a column for what each plan includes and how its usage is limited.

Reading the table: three patterns worth noticing

Pattern one — the "$20 cluster." Claude Pro, ChatGPT Plus, Cursor Pro, and Windsurf/Devin Pro all land right around $20/month, but they're not the same product. Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are chat subscriptions that also include a terminal coding agent (Claude Code, Codex) under shared usage limits; Cursor Pro and Windsurf/Devin Pro are agent-first tools built around an editor. If you're comparing sticker price without checking what's included and how usage is limited, you can end up paying $20 for a plan that doesn't fit how you work.

Pattern two — flat subscriptions regardless of use. Every tool on this list except meshcode charges the same amount whether you build ten features that month or none. There's no "light week" discount. If your usage is bursty — heavy for a sprint, quiet for a few weeks — you're still paying full price through the quiet weeks on any subscription plan.

Pattern three — the ceiling tiers are steep. Claude Max at ~$100/month, Windsurf/Devin Max at ~$200/month, and Replit Pro at ~$100/month exist because the entry tiers cap out fast for heavy agentic use. Coding agents burn a lot of tokens reading and rewriting files, and once you outgrow the entry tier, the jump to the next one is usually 4-5x the price, not a modest bump.

Why token cost is the real story behind the sticker price

Every number in that table ultimately traces back to one thing: how many tokens the underlying model burns per task, and what that provider charges per token. A chatbot answering a question reads and writes a small amount of text. A coding agent reading your codebase, editing several files, running the result, and fixing what broke — that's a much bigger token bill per session, and premium models charge more per token on top of that. That's why "full agent" tiers cost more than "chat" tiers even when both plans are labeled "Pro."

• It's a native desktop app (Mac and Windows) that can run multiple AI models or agents at once, rather than the one-model-per-window pattern most of the tools above use.

A rough way to apply it: if your week is mostly small edits and autocomplete, the $8-10/month tier (ChatGPT Go, Copilot Pro) is the cheapest way in, as long as its usage limit or credit allowance covers what you run. If you want a chat assistant plus a terminal agent on one bill, Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus at ~$20/month includes Claude Code or Codex. If you want an agent-first tool built around an editor or your own machine, you're choosing between Cursor Pro, Windsurf/Devin Pro, Replit Core, and meshcode — and at that point, the difference that matters most is whether you're paying a flat fee for weeks you don't use, or only for the work you actually ship.
